Lost In Footy

Help the Southern Stars to a successful season of 15 rounds in this unique JavaScript simulation with a space-age theme.

Follow the progress of the Southern Stars as well as the other 15 teams as their form evolves throughout the season.

Can you predict which teams are going to win? Scores from "Around The Grounds" are displayed as each match progresses, but remember to factor in recent form. The winning margins and the quality of the opposition both play an important part in the evolution of each team's form. A team's form will improve more if they beat a high quality opposition. Similarly, it's bad to get beaten by a poor team. Last year's finishing positions influence early season form. Keep an eye on last year's ladder. The dividends shown on the scoreboard indicate the recent form of each team. The most recent results have the greatest impact on a team's form. See if you can get the Southern Stars to finish the season on top of the ladder. The Supreme Beings are a formidable opponent.

Important points

  • There are 16 teams. See the Teams section of the screen for information about each team.
  • Each season consists of 15 rounds.
  • Each match consists of four 20-minute quarters.
  • The teams in your match change direction every quarter. Look at the text displayed above the goals to see which direction the Southern Stars is heading towards.
  • All of the matches in each round are played simultaneously. You can see the progress scores from other matches while your team is playing.
  • The Southern Stars look like the robot from the TV series Lost In Space.
  • Your player is slightly brighter than your teammates and has an asterisk on top.
  • The field contains 25 positions, or craters.
  • Tackling and marking can only occur on the craters.
  • Make your player kick for goal by clicking anywhere in the grassy area behind the posts. Remember to Double-Click or Control-Click to kick the ball.
  • Improve your chances of scoring a goal by shooting from close to the goals. It makes no difference which part of the grassy area you click on.
  • The accuracy of shots for goal is influenced by the distance, the angle and also the proximity of the nearest opponent (ie if you are under pressure).
  • Only one player from each team can occupy a field position at any time.
  • Tackle your opponents by intercepting their arrival at field positions.
  • A tackle will usually result in a turnover. The likelihood of a turnover is influenced by the ability of each team.
  • A pass to a teammate in a contest will usually result in a mark to your teammate. It is also influenced by the ability of each team. Look for teammates calling for the ball, indicated by an exclamation mark.
  • Your player can move faster than the others while leading for the ball.
  • Lock your player by clicking on the field.
  • Locking your player puts your player into manual mode. At other times your player is in automatic mode.
  • In manual mode your player will run to the place where you click.
  • The number of stars indicates the amount of time before your player is automatically unlocked.
  • White stars mean that your player is protected (eg after taking a mark).
  • Red stars mean that your player is unprotected and can be tackled.
  • If you are locked, your teammates will pass the ball to you, or the place where you are heading towards, unless they are close enough to shoot for goal.
  • Unlock your player immediately by clicking on the position where you are standing.
  • The game is being updated regularly with new features.

Controls:

Left mouse button: Run and lead for the ball
Double-Click or Control-Click: Kick (When your player has the ball)

Footy Sudoku

This is a footy adaptation of a traditional Sudoku game. It includes the ability to solve Sudoku puzzles for you by using a recursive algorithm. Type in a puzzle from a newspaper or puzzle book etc and use the Mark feature so that you know which squares not to change. Click on a selected square to remove the number from that square.

You should love this game for its variety of puzzles, its scoring system, the club colours and its impressive ability to solve puzzles quickly!

Footy Brain

Footy Brain is a fun game designed to test a person's mathematical skills, with emphasis on multiplication, addition and probability. The Normal and Hard games challenge the user to correctly match goals, behinds and totals for the randomly generated scoring combinations.

A timer has been added to these games to really test your skill!

The Punter game is quite different and requires a unique combination of luck and skill. In this game the goals, behinds and points (totals) already match. The challenge is to choose the winning outcome from a set of 4 randomly generated choices. The program randomly selects a 'correct' answer according to a weighted set of probabilities. The 4 choices displayed usually consist of the most likely combinations. It is based on the assumption of a goal being equally as likely as a behind.

For example (Punter game):

1. The program randomly selects a total of 110.

2. The program uses random selection from the probability distribution of all possible combinations to select 4 combinations of goals and behinds and displays them in a list of choices.

eg:
17 goals 8 behinds
16 goals 14 behinds
15 goals 20 behinds
14 goals 26 behinds.

Due to the random nature of the program it can display a slightly different set of choices at other times.

eg:
18 goals 2 behinds
17 goals 8 behinds
16 goals 14 behinds
14 goals 26 behinds

3. The program knows the probability of each combination being the 'winner' and uses those probabilities to produce the winning dividends. It then adds a random amount (up to 50% of the original) to each dividend to produce the dividend that is displayed in the list (scoreboard) next to each score. It is a good idea to look for the best value when making your selection. You might like to play conservatively by selecting the favourites or if you are prepared to take risks to obtain a high score you will be more inclined to select outsiders.

There are no guarantees and the program picks the winners completely independently of your selections. If you do play the Punter game why not set yourself a target of winning $30 and a minimum of 10 correct choices.
